Touted as ‘a road thriller with dark humour’ in its promotional campaign, THE FILM EMOTIONAL ATYACHAR is a road thriller for sure. But the humour falls flat and is puerile rather than dark.

Without much ado, debutante director Akshay Shere gets straight to the story. The various characters and their intentions are elucidated gradually. The non-linear narrative which intersperses multiple stories is impressive. The style and production values of the film seem influenced by the likes of Anurag Kashyap and Vishal Bharadwaj.

They say love makes the world go round. In this flick, it’s money. Laden with grey characters, the film is set on the Mumbai-Goa highway.

A young wannabe businessman Hiten (Anand Tiwari), driving alone from Goa to Mumbai, finds an injured voyager Vikram (Mohit Alawat) pleading for help. Keeping this as the central premise, three other stories unfold as the clock ticks.

Leslie (Ranvir Shorey) and Joe (Vinay Pathak) are two corrupt cops trying to claim hafta (bribe) from casino owner Bosco (Abhimanyu Singh). Sophie (Kalki Koechlin) is Bosco’s muse, for whom Leslie has a soft corner. Junior Bhai (Ravi Kissen) along with his two accomplices plans a big robbery. Like mentioned earlier, all the stories are eventually connected, with a bag full of money.

The sharp editing (Pranav V. Dhiwar) and smart story-telling make up for a slightly convoluted plot. Music by Mangesh Dhadke definitely adds value to the swift narrative.
The humour isn’t up to the mark but there are a few uproarious scenes like the one in which Junior Bhai and the other goons wear swine flu masks for their theft or when he says ‘Gadhe ke hath me ghoda (gun) aane se sher nahin ban jaata’.

On the performances front, Ranvir Shorey and Vinay Pathak are outstanding. They have been working together since a long time now, which is evident in their excellent camaraderie. Ravi Kishen goes a little overboard in his bhai act. Mohit Alawat gives a decent performance. Kalki Koechlin is good as the deceitful woman. Abhimanyu Singh leaves a mark.

This EMOTIONAL ATYACHAR isn’t an atyachar. Watch it without expecting too much and you’ll have a good time.

The Film – Emotional Atayachar, is a ROAD THRILLER WITH BLACK HUMOUR. It is an ensemble film set on the deserted highway between Mumbai and Goa and revolves around incidents that take place in one night to four sets of travelers.

Kareena Kapoor has taken the whole responsibility of promoting the Karan Johar’s next movie We Are Family as Kajol will not be available for the same. Well, there is nothing fishy about this piece of news. It is only because Kajol is expecting her second baby and she cannot tour the country during that time.

We Are Family is the Bollywood remake of a 1998 Hollywood movie titled Stepmom, which starred Julia Roberts and Susan Sarandon and Ed Harris.

The Kareena and Kajol starrer movie is scheduled to hit the screens during Eid in this September. Owing to unavailability of Kajol for the promotions, UTV and Dharma Productions have planned to take Kareena to several city tours to promote the film. Bebo is also very much comfortable with this as she says the project is very close to her heart. Kareena has given a bulk of dates to Karan for the promotion of We Are Family.

According to a source, “As Kajol is expecting, it will be very unfair to ask her to travel all around the country to promote the film. Kareena has confirmed her availability to Karan for the promotional activities”.

Now, it is the sole responsibility of Kareena Kapoor to charm the audience and the press and earn the limelight.

Director Siddarth Malhotra, said, “The film is definitely releasing on Eid. It is everybody’s film and the entire cast will be available whenever they can. But it would be too much if we expect Kajol to travel everywhere”.

The ‘chawl’ culture of Mumbai has never been too far from Hindi cinema. From Basu Chatterjee’s ‘Piya Ka Ghar’ to Sanjay Jha’s ‘Pran Jaye Par Chawl Na Jaye’ to Mahesh Manjrekar’s ‘City Of Gold’ and Chandan Arora’s ‘Striker’, many gripping tales of resilience and kinship have been put on screen with no trace of self pity or anger in the underprivileged characters who go about their lives with dignity, optimism and humor even after queuing up for an hour to get into the dingy public toilet.

‘Madholal…Keep Walking’ is a well intended look at people we know from the chawls even if we’ve never been to one. The conversation among the characters is authentic. But the sad part is, these characters don’t seem to be saying anything that interests anyone apart from the characters who speak mundane matters acquires a certain engaging quality on screen only when ordinariness is treated with extraordinary empathy. This was the case recently with Irfan Kamal’s ‘Thanks, Maa’ where one slum kid’s quest for a mother made all the routine characters assume a life beyond their appointed ennui.

In ‘Madholal…’ The plot and dialogues create no interest in the characters. For half the film we grow familiar with the hand to mouth world of the the protagonist Madholal (Subrat Dutta) his family of loving wife and two daughters and his circle of friends with whom he commutes by train every day. The conversation among the friends is essentially about sex or the lack of it.

One can’t but recall with pleasure and warmth the middle class ladies traveling to and fro in the local trains of Mumbai in the soap ‘Ladies Special’. Not one of the characters traveling with Madholal in these crowded trains appears interesting enough to meet, let alone take home.

Midway through the flat narration there’s a bomb blast on a train. The lives of the people who populate the film are turned around. Madholal, we are happy to know, keeps walking. There are some purposely poignant and emotional highpoints in the story that touch you with their sincerity in the second half. Actor Purba Dutta who plays Madholal conveys a profound anguish and helplessness in the second half. His train journey at the end when he comes to terms with his changed circumstances in life is a measure of the resilience that Mumbai’s middleclass epitomizes.

Sadly the film never quite takes off. The plot is too blunt about its noble intentions to convey the grief of common people caught in the downside of terrorism. This look at Mumbai’s undying spirit is like a Village Mela after closing time. If ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ was Mumbai on steroids, ‘Madholal …Keep Walking’ takes the lives from a chawl on a lifeless journey.

Jeeva (Karthi) has a picture-perfect life. A happy family, supportive friends and a lovable girlfriend Priya (Kajal Agarwal) makes him feel like paradise-on-earth. But an unexpected twist in the tale comes through his father (Jayaprakash), who is murdered by a mysterious group. Later, it’s revealed that Jeeva’s father, a cab driver by profession was the witness to a boy and girl mysteriously murdered.

Jeeva sets out to settle the scores with the help of his friend, a goon across the coastal areas of Royapuram.

But sooner, when the things go out of control, it’s up to Jeeva to settle the scores on his own terms.

Karthi’s previous films ‘Aayirathil Oruvan’ and ‘Paiyaa’ share the same similarities of first half being brimmed with fun and romance while the second hour travels on action. In all likelihood, this film too follows the same pattern.

The prologue appearing before the title credits distinctly depicts what this film is all about. The first half has some interesting parts as Karthi evokes laughter with his mannerisms. His casualness over performing such acts wins the applause. His way of proposing Kajal Agarwal at the first meeting is over the top. Watch out for his breathtaking stunt sequence during climax. Although, the stunts choreographed by Anal Arasu faintly reminiscences ‘Renigunta’, they’re just overpowering.

Susindran’s debut directorial ‘Vennila Kabadi Kulu’ had an excellent screenplay as it could pull the audiences’ interests throughout the show. Nonetheless, he fails to come up with similar efforts in this film. He had reported this film to be based on increasing crime-rates in Chennai. Neither do we find such things, which is a complete disappointment. A good research over the crime reports in Chennai would have yielded him better results. How could 4 youngsters easily bump off the Chennai’s leading Goon & Co within short span of time? The friends are known for their cruelness and at the same time are shown lamenting over the pal’s death. It’s out and most ridiculous. Kajal Agarwal appears for the romantic portions and she hasn’t got anything to do with the film. Jayaprakash as Karthi’s father is appreciable while art director Rajeevan spotted as police officer is ludicrous. The violence factors are found in abundance and Susindran could have avoided showing such harshness.

Musical score by Yuvan Shankar Raja is okay. The film just has three songs and ‘Iragai Pole’ is a stunning number. Cinematography by Mathi is average as he tries to capture the shots by adjusting contrasts and tones. Editing is sleek and stylish. Dialogues are finely done; especially the comedy liners are enjoyable.

On the whole, ‘Naan Mahaan Alla’ is an average fare and if you watch it out any expectations, there isn’t anything that gratifies you. Karthi has to make sure, he chooses a better script like his elder brother Suriya while for Susindran, its better if he keeps himself limited to nativity based scripts and not to unnecessarily involve himself with subjects far above his head.
